I have never involved myself in this issue, but believe in treating it seriously — without the locker-room jocularity of this cartoon by Manawatu Standard cartoonist Evans. It was published on April 18, 2013.
A big problem for the Catholic Church has been coming to terms with its fall from “superpower status” in Western society — from the preeminent position it enjoyed in the first 1000 years or so of the Christian era, when it was a law unto itself. It was so powerful, it wasn’t answerable to anyone. And being closed, it was beyond scrutiny. Accepting that it is now no more than a bit player in society, and subject to the secular state outside the areas of religious doctrine and observance, has been painful. Hence the church’s reluctance to “come clean” on the sex crimes of its priests. The cartoon is from the Manawatu Standard, New Zealand, of January 22, 2011.

Cartoon from the Manawatu Standard of August 19, 2009.
Almost everyone agrees that we have appalling rates of domestic violence in New Zealand, and that women and children are nearly always the victims of this. (The same is probably true of most Western countries.) Yet when one reads “white”, supremacist literature, one might suppose that European men are knights in shining armor – with the exception of a few “bad apples”. In contrast, we are led to believe that all Muslim men beat their wives all the time, almost as a matter of religious routine. Little or no evidence is produced to support this claim, apart from lurid reports of “honor killings” in societies that are, one suspects, more tribal than truly Islamic.
The above cartoon is from the Manawatu Standard of June 30, 2009.
